The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

I went into this film with an open mind. No, that’s a lie. I did go into it wanting to be proved wrong; hoping Peter Jackson would impress me with how he pulled it all off. Didn’t work out so well. The story ends before the title card! I’m sorry that’s kind of a spoiler, but really if it happens BEFORE THE TITLE CARD OF THE FILM can it really be considered a spoiler? If so, then I apologize. I was admittedly rolling my eyes a few times rather liberally after that start. Because my trust in this film was […]

Luke Evans swaps the valleys for the Shire

At the age of 30, this Welsh actor became an overnight success. Now he’s playing dragon-slayers and Draculas in big-budget movies “They were the first victim of my career,” sighs Luke Evans ruefully. He was very attached to his tropical fish; at the end of each day he’d melt into a beanbag and gaze at them endlessly. But as the movies got bigger, stealing him from his London home for months at a time, they had to go. “These discus were beautiful. The fish man came into my house and scooped them out into bags, gave me £20 for them. […]

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Be forewarned: my review of the second Hobbit film is kind of vague and philosophical more than my usual analysis. Because there’s not much to say. This has the feel of a story pulled apart and so half formed. There’s new characters but no depth in their relationships or interactions. Tauriel’s relationship with Legolas and his relationship with his father and all the possible intricacies and tension and… we’re given nothing. Even though I think the elves (and the credit song) are the best part of the whole thing. There’s action and great production values, but there was no doubt […]

Fast & Furious 6

Fast & Furious 6

I really liked Fast 5. And because of that I kind of have a soft spot for the Fast & Furious movies. kind of. I mean, I haven’t seen the first movie in years and would love to rewatch it. I saw the second movie and thought it was ridiculous. Have never seen the third movie. I tried to but couldn’t get past the first fifteen minutes. The fourth one is on tv all the time so I’ve seen that quite a bit and it’s fun enough on a Saturday afternoon with nothing going on. But I really expected to […]

Photo of the week: I was completely excited about a picture of Luke Evans and Orlando Bloom! Together! In Hobbity-type things. But then it’s not nearly as awesome of a picture as I was hoping for. So there’s two pictures of the week this week.

Luke Evans’ Immortals Workout

Posted November 24, 2011

Merely 4 years ago, Luke Evans was hitting high notes on the London theatre circuit. Today, he’s cinema’s go-to guy for brandishing rapiers, daggers, and a million-watt smile. It’s been a rush of blood to the head, he says, and more than a little challenge to consistently to look good and god-like. Men’s Health: Four years ago, you literally walked off a London stage and onto an airplane to play Apollo in Clash of the Titans. What do you pack when you’re hopping the pond?Luke Evans: A couple of pairs of trousers. Always a pair of shorts if I’m coming […]

Admittedly, it’s been a while since I’ve seen Immortals. But I did not like it at all, which is why I haven’t seen it again now that it’s opened.

Immortals, of course, opens today. I’ve seen it but will hold my review until Monday when all the box office numbers are done.

In other movie news, the premiere for Breaking Dawn part 1 is on Monday and fangirl fervor

I have to admit, it was obvious from the trailer that this wasn’t going to be a great movie. But I love the story and I like a lot of the actors and I was so curious I had to go see it
