What do you think about when you think about The Lord of the Rings?Moments of self-sacrifice and unexpected heroism, which are the twin strands of the trilogy’s DNA. When the people who actually made The Lord of the Rings think about The Lord of the Rings — and we asked a dozen of them, as they hugged and caught up for the first time in years at photo shoots in Los Angeles, London, and Sydney — they remember New Zealand, and the most exhausting, exhilarating years of their lives. To be specific: They remember shooting the very first scene in […]
I finally saw Happy Feet. Normally I don’t watch animated movies in theaters, simply because I don’t enjoy them enough to make it worth the effort. But Elijah Wood was in this one and I have inherited a fondness for him from my sister and an old roommate who both adore him.
Hobbits are cute. And short. And filled with joy. And they’re currently charging into Los Angeles’s Woo Lae Oak, a Korean restaurant that they frequent when they’re in town, looking wide-eyed and excited. Playfully jostling one another, Elijah Wood, Dominic Monaghan, and Billy Boyd enthusiastically descend upon a large booth that nearly envelops them. Enough decent roles kept coming his way that he did not have time to do a single stage play or complete high school. He figured he could learn more “from life,” […]
“IT FEELS LIKE THIS ROAD COULD GO ON endlessly,” Elijah Wood says, spinning around and then walking on the flat, cracked earth of a dry lake bed in California’s Mojave Desert. “You are chasing something that you are not actually reaching.” We are staring at a mirage, walking toward it as it recedes in the dry heat a mere two-hour drive from Wood’s home in Santa Monica. “I’ll have to make pilgrimages out here.” In the distance, a brushfire rages, casting a smoke plume high into the cloudless sky, but Wood focuses on the dusty earth below us, and he […]
