How Chris Hemsworth Found His Way as a Movie Star

How Chris Hemsworth Found His Way as a Movie Star

Posted May 28, 2019

Like everyone else, Chris Hemsworth recently bought tickets to see Avengers: Endgame. This was actually his second time watching it. The first time Hemsworth saw the film was in mid-April at the premiere in Los Angeles. When Hemsworth returned home to Australia a few days later, his three kids — 7-year-old daughter India Rose and 5-year-old twin sons Sasha and Tristan — persuaded him to join them for a showing. “My kids were dying to see it. I wasn’t going to take them. They were like, ‘Dad, we have to go!’ We found a small cinema so we wouldn’t get […]

Chris Hemsworth Is Post-Hunk

Chris Hemsworth Is Post-Hunk

How, in times like these, is a golden-haired, chiseled-bodied action star supposed to be…relevant? On field day recently at Chris Hemsworth’s daughter’s school, he and a slew of other fathers prepared for the “dads race.” They assembled—all feigning disinterest, all ready to kill for victory. The other dads had dressed to move, but Hemsworth was wearing jeans and boots. Hours before, having watched his daughter’s events—the egg-and-spoon race, the 100-meter and the 200-meter dash—he offered his 6-year-old some fatherly wisdom: “I was like, ‘It’s great, honey. It’s not about winning.’ ” But that advice was trash, he realized. He got […]

Avengers: Infinity War

When Marvel filmed Avengers: Infinity War, they had no way of knowing how successful Black Panther would be. They probably guessed it would be successful enough. Because all of the Marvel movies have been. But 3rd highest domestic gross and and 5th biggest opening weekend. Beyond the money, it was a cultural phenomena that made so many different people feel their voice heard in new and undeniable ways. It also inspired Disney to share a little bit of the wealth to support youth STEM programs. Which means they will unequivocally make a sequel. They did know, when filming Infinity War, […]

Thor: Ragnarok

Thor: Ragnarok

Ragnarok is a moderately decent Marvel movie. But it isn’t a good Thor movie. The standalone movies each have distinctive styles. An Iron Man film is contemporary and flashy with trusty sidekicks Pepper and Happy and Rhoddy and quippy one-liners. Captain America lost both his sidekicks (the Roaring Commandos) and his wonderful love interest (the incredible Peggy Carter) when he jumped forward in time. Since then his movies haven’t really been his – they’ve served as vehicles for the MCU with Cap as the centerpiece. And Thor… well a Thor movie has a bit of epic grandiosity and beauty. There’s […]

Chris Hemsworth on Why Weightlifting Alone Isn’t Enough to Get In Superhero Shape for Thor

Australian actor Chris Hemsworth recently suited up as the face of the Boss Bottle’s latest fragrance, Tonic, but off-duty he’s much more casual. “I spend so much time in board shorts at the beach, and so I don’t tend to wear that with the kids,” explained the father of three on a recent afternoon in New York. “But when I’m dressing up and going out, this is nice and light.” Okay, so what’s it like to be a real life superhero? It’s great. The kids think it’s pretty cool. One of them in particular is more impressed than the other two. […]

The Huntsman: Winter’s War

The Huntsman: Winter’s War

I really, really wanted to love Huntsman: Winter’s War. Really. Like one of my new favorite movies kind of love. It’s fantasy action adventure which is like my perfect genre. It’s pretty and well made. It has an AMAZING song in the trailer (and I love good trailers). I wanted it to be as good as that song. As exciting. As full of passion and danger and fearlessness. It is full of interesting female characters who drive the story. And it stars Chris Hemsworth! How is this not one of the best movies ever made? Because it isn’t. And you […]

Can Hollywood Handle Decent, Modest, Good-Humored Chris Hemsworth?

Can Hollywood Handle Decent, Modest, Good-Humored Chris Hemsworth?

Posted November 1, 2015

In March, Hemsworth, 32, hosted Saturday Night Live. The best bit was a send-up of those American Express commercials that feature famous people presenting themselves in modest, no-frills, this-is-the-real-me ways that are actually self-congratulatory and carefully contrived. Hemsworth is the most movie-starrish of his movie-star peers, by which I mean he’s the best-looking. Channing Tatum’s a hot young hunk, he however, has a beefcake quality. (He knows it, too, and uses it; it’s part of what makes him such a sly—and amusing—presence on-screen.) Bradley Cooper is the guy who was out of your league in college. Not that out of […]

Avengers: Age of Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron

I happened to watch Agents of SHIELD, the Dirty Half Dozen before I went to see Age of Ultron and it was pretty impressive how one picked up right where the other left off. It felt like one universe. It was one of the few things Agents of SHIELD did right. One of the things Age of Ultron managed is that despite all the previews and hype everywhere, I still went in not knowing what to expect. And I was surprised. I liked that the pacing of the third act wasn’t typical. I liked that it did the unexpected. I […]

Chris Hemsworth: The Manliest Man In Hollywood

Chris Hemsworth: The Manliest Man In Hollywood

Posted December 11, 2014

Chris Hemsworth grew up scrapping with two brothers (the actors Liam, younger, and Luke, elder) and guided by a father who once raced motorbikes and wrangled buffalo. He surfs and boxess and knows Muay Thai. And so I wondered, is Hemsworth the rare Hollywood leading man who is actually more robust, more manly in reality than the characters he plays? Normally he’d be out surfing—and I’d ask to tag along for this piece—but since the Malibu coastline is glass-flat this week, he has another suggestion: What if we go mountain biking instead? This is an excellent idea that frightens the hell out […]
