I’ve never been a huge Jake Gyllenhaal fan, but I like him a lot more after seeing Source Code.
The basics were all there for a sci fi/action movie: decent effects, unique concept, dashing leading man. And most of it worked.
But, like a lot of sci fi stories, trying to validate their science in a fantastical situation was their downfall. The premise is ridiculous. But I’ve already bought my ticket which means I’ve volunteered to suspend my disbelief. Once they started the illogical and ludicrous attempt to explain the science they lost me.
Jake Gyllenhaal’s emotional journey, though, was really interesting. He carries the audience through the movie very well and keeps it grounded and interesting despite the pseudo science that should have just been left out.
He should get a lot more credit for this movie then I think he will.
