NEVERWAS poster

Rating: 2 of 5 ★★☆☆☆

This movie has a colossal fatal flaw that I can’t discuss without spoiling everything.

The intent of this movie, I think, is to be unique. To play on the recent interest in fantasy films and give it a bit of a twist. The problem is that the twist undercuts everything people love about fantasy films. Which completely invalidates all of the build up that allows this movie to fit into any sort of fantasy-genre classification.

It’s a difficult line. You want to ask, is this real; could this actually be real? Because maybe that’s a really interesting question to ask. But as soon as you do, the answer had better be yes; because anything else is just a disappointment that sucks all of the magic out of the movie.

I mean, it doesn’t help that I don’t particularly like any of the characters. Admittedly, in the balance of actor/character creating likability, these fall short on the actor side of the equation.

But it isn’t all horrible even though I didn’t love the characters or certain pieces of the story. Honestly, it was a sweet little movie that wants to be magical. and almost is…
