There’s a part of me that doesn’t want to like Katherine Heigl. And then there’s the part of me that saw 27 Dresses and thought, “This girl is a star and this sort of movie is what’s going to do it for her.” and was happy because she’s that good in it.

27 Dresses is funny, especially when it’s unexpected which is great because so few things in films are unexpected these days. The characters take you by surprise in the same moments they take each other by surprise which is kind of wonderful.
Kevin: Can I have your drink?
Jane: Sure. No! Wait…
Kevin: Oh, and you were doing so good.

The thing that makes it particularly good is it’s realism. The characters aren’t caught up in some sugary-sweet romantic comedy. They curse and they’re cynical and mean and hurt each other and cry when they’re sad. The characters a really well developed and authentic which totally works. Katherine Heigl pulls off Jane so well, she’s goofy funny and endearing and sad and in love and angry and she does all of them delightfully well. James Marsden is also particularly good and that’s encouraging. I’m glad he finally got to stop being the good guy who always loses the girl. He played a little bit of a darker character and it worked for him.

And of course it’s a romantic comedy so it is sweet. But it didn’t feel contrived, which most romantic comedies do, which is nice. It’s a good cry; the kind that makes you cry because of how fantastic it is and how sweet and not a sad cry at all. Definitely one of the better romantic comedies.
