I don’t really watch comedies because my sense of humor is a bit odd. I also don’t really review comedies because either you laugh or you don’t and most are intended to be so outlandish (in order to get you to laugh) that it’s not really fair to judge them on the same scale as other movies. So, my initial review was: “It’s funny. Good action. Masi Oka is very funny.” which really isn’t much of a review.
The essence is that it was very funny the first time. I laughed out loud more than once and it should probably get an extra half star for that (but where do you put that credit? Performances? Writing? Do I need a new category for comedies?). Though I don’t know how funny it would be on second or third viewing. That’s the other thing with comedies, half the fun is the surprise of the moment. When you see the joke coming, is it still funny?
And because it’s outlandish, the characters are more caricature than anything else. Which I get that they’re supposed to be, but I don’t buy into it.
Mostly, it’s a lot of fun and it’s not trying to be anything else so that’s enough, at least once.
“A swordfish almost went through my head.”
