X-Men Dark Phoenix

X-Men Dark Phoenix

Posted June 17, 2019

I went into Dark Phoenix with fairly low expectations. Other than James McAvoy I wasn’t in love with the cast. And it’s a story Fox has tried to do before. With one of my favorite characters. And, despite box office success, few of the X-Men movies have really been spectacular (Days of Future Past is pretty much the exception). Also while I love Jean Grey, I’m only familiar with the Dark Phoenix saga through wikipedia (and honestly I read through the Endsong rather than Dark Phoenix years ago because it’s gorgeous. Which means Dark Phoenix was either going to be […]

Super Friends – James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender

Posted July 24, 2014

TRUTH, LIES, AND PRESS JUNKETS Fassbender sips from his pint of Sussex Bitter Ale as his close friend and costar James McAvoy takes over the job of explaining the appeal of X-Men: Days of Future Past — both for audiences and for these two accomplished actors. It’s early still at the Lord Stanley in North London, but in true pub-sermonizing fashion, McAvoy becomes instantly animated. James McAvoy: People have been asking me a lot, “Why have superhero movies become so popular recently?” And they go, “Is it because they’ve become really serious and blah, blah?” I’m like, “No, it’s not.” […]

X-Men Days of Future Past

X-Men Days of Future Past

Posted June 16, 2014

I did not expect to love Days of Future Past the way I did. The concept was complicated and convoluted. There were stories from the set about the script changing or this or that going wrong. I didn’t love any of the earlier films in the franchise, even though X-Men was always my favorite cast of comic characters growing up. I actually feel like a lot of the franchise was really mishandled prior to this film. But that’s the cool thing about Days of Future Past – it’s this remarkable reset button. And it’s actually an X-Men movie done well. […]

Event Horizon| Comic Con 2013

Event Horizon| Comic Con 2013

Posted July 24, 2013

Tragically, I wasn’t at Comic Con this year. …It’s entirely possible I need to remind myself of the actual definition of tragic but I digress. In lieu of having actually been there I’ve collected all sorts of news and videos and photos from the panels so we can all pretend we were there together. Marvel Marvel definitely knows how to do Comic Con. Though I found their panels a bit lackluster this year, mostly because I’m not that interested in the properties they had panels for. There was a Captain America panel, which was the most interesting. But no good […]

X-Men: First Class

X-Men: First Class

In some ways, this was a great movie and in some ways it was uneven (though not nearly as uneven as X2). But the easy stuff first:

I wasn’t thrilled with Kevin Bacon as the villain. In theory I thought it was great, but in

James McAvoy| The Movieline Interview

Posted January 1, 2010

James McAvoy’s latest, the semi-biopic The Last Station, drops him into the eye of an ensemble hurricane featuring Helen Mirren, Christopher Plummer and Paul Giamatti. The 30-year-old-Scotman plays Valentin Bulgakov, an idealistic young Russian recruited to work as the secretary of the celebrated novelist Leo Tolstoy (Plummer). But what begins as an act of moral conscience soon deteriorates into a hot political mess as Tolstoy’s inheritance-obsessed wife Sofya (Mirren) and estate overseer Chertkov (Giamatii) vie for Valentin’s loyalty. Which is to say nothing of the young man’s Tolstoyan vow of celibacy, which is awfully hard to uphold with the beautiful […]

James McAvoy Details Q&A

Posted July 1, 2008

The Scottish actor went from making eyes at Keira Knightley to toting a semiautomatic pistol and making out with Angelina Jolie. Not a bad year. Standing in the urban equivalent of a clearing in the woods, surrounded by squat stone buildings and haloed by an enormous Kmart sign, James McAvoy looks like an extra from a production of Oliver in need of a Grande latte. It doesn’t help that he’s wearing a newsboy cap pulled down over his ears. Or that it’s one of those Dickensian days in New York when smoke-colored clouds spray a steady shower of cold rain […]

Wanted is seriously badass. If nothing else, you kind of have to love that about it.

The movie follows Wesely Gibson (James McAvoy) essentially through a journey of discovering who

James McAvoy| This Summer’s Most ‘Wanted’

Posted June 1, 2008

In this exclusive interview, the reluctant sex symbol talks about the physical challenges of his first slick action flick, why period dramas and blockbusters aren’t really all that different, and what it’s like working with Angelina. Calling James McAvoy a “hot Scot” probably won’t impress the Glasgow-born Wanted star, who is far more comfortable chatting about football games with friends in British pubs than he is pondering any presumed international sex appeal. “It’s completely something I brush off and laugh at,” says McAvoy with a melodious Scottish brogue, pushing a hand through his brown shaggy hair. “It’s not something that […]

Atonement is a lovely film. It’s simple and straightforward, not lovely because it’s told with a soft lense or because there is a sense of wonder and beauty about it. But lovely because the
