The Last Mimzy

LAST MIMZY poster

Rating: 1.75 of 5 ★¾☆☆☆

I don’t have that much to say about The Last Mimzy. It had some interesting and fun ideas that wove Tibetan mythology with Alice and Wonderland. It was an interesting story with some very pretty elements, but it wasn’t necessarily well executed. There were moments here and there that worked, a few laughs, and the premise and a lot of the ideas were clever. But overall it seemed to be trying too hard.

The performances were ok but weren’t brilliant, especially from the kids. If Abigail Breslin had been young enough she’d have been perfect for the little girl.

Performances: ★½☆☆☆

I did enjoy that there were tesseracts in it and I loved how they were portrayed. That’s exactly what I think tesseracts look like.

Production: ★★★☆☆

I thought a lot of it had a detached quality to it; the whole time I kept thinking, “That’s an interesting idea” but I was never drawn into the story and experienced the ideas they were exploring.

Part of the problem, I think is that they were pretty obviously trying to work the same magic as E.T. But like everything else, it seemed to be trying too hard. I think the core flaw stems from the director which is sad because I like Bob Shaye as a producer. There were several interesting shots and angles, but some of them felt as if he was trying too hard to be intense or interesting. There was very little of anything that felt organic or natural rather than forced.
