Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Rating: 3.5 of 5

The Winter Soldier was not quite what I expected. Though, to be fair, I tried not to expect much.

It was much more real world than prior Marvel movies, I think even more so than the Iron Man films. Because Tony Stark as a billionaire playboy doesn’t resemble much of real life even . . . → more

Divergent

Rating: 3.25 of 5

I really wanted to hate Divergent. I hate the hype over it when the writing in the novel is so elementary. I’m not a fan of Shailene Woodley’s. I didn’t really like Insurgent or Allegiant which makes me hate the hype even more. And now, after seeing the movie, I really hate . . . → more

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Rating: 3.5 of 5

I was a bit wary going into this movie. I just finished reading The Dream Thieves and Catching Fire can’t come close to those characters. And the intrigue. And the way the story sinks into you. I’m not sure it would make a great movie but it’s an amazing story.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Rating: 3.5 of 5

Seeing this Hobbit was an interesting experience because for the first time in a long while I couldn’t remember that much about the book. It’s been 6-7 years since I read it. And I remembered the big set pieces enough to know what to expect from the first movie, and wonder how . . . → more

Thor – The Dark World

Rating: 4 of 5

I was expecting this movie to be good. I liked the first one a lot (with only a few qualifications) and I liked the character even more in The Avengers. So, yes, I pretty much expected The Dark World to be good. And even then, I was impressed.

Wolverine

Rating: 3.75 of 5

I have to admit that I heard a couple of Collider interviews that pointed out that this isn’t really a comic book movie until the third act and I totally have to agree. It’s thoughtful and interesting and sort of everything I expected the first Wolverine movie to be. But for all . . . → more

Pacific Rim

Rating: 3.5 of 5

Pacific Rim is soooo cool!

That was my initial impression when they showed footage at Comic Con last year, and also the strongest reaction I had leaving the theater today. But I was also impressed that in the midst of a giant monsters vs. giant robots movie there’s such a strong human . . . → more

The Lone Ranger

Rating: 2.75 of 5

I almost don’t even want to review The Lone Ranger, I just want to talk about when marketing lies. And it’s rare that I get taken in by marketing. But the trailers were about a sort of silly concept with some outlandish action and a little danger – like something trying to . . . → more

Man of Steel

Rating: 2.75 of 5

It’s not often that my reviews are as colored by other opinions and insights as this one is. But that’s what happens when I wait a week to write it, and in this case I think it makes for a better review.

There was a lot to like in Man of Steel. . . . → more

Fast & Furious 6

Rating: 3 of 5

I really liked Fast 5. And because of that I kind of have a soft spot for the Fast & Furious movies. kind of. I mean, I haven’t seen the first movie in years and would love to rewatch it. I saw the second movie and thought it was ridiculous. Have never . . . → more
