I’ve been interested in seeing Passengers since I first saw the trailer. Shiny sci-fi with a bit of romance, a bit of fun and a bit of danger. Even a mystery to unravel. Plus a chance for two endearing actors to prove themselves in a starring vehicle. Then after hearing whispers that critics weren’t kind, I wasn’t sure. I refuse to read any reviews or judge a film on anything but the trailer until I’ve seen it myself… so I went to see it for myself with a bit of trepidation. It was pretty much exactly what I thought it’d […]
Category: Jennifer Lawrence
In a mere six years, Jennifer Lawrence has blazed past every marker of Hollywood stardom, with no sign of slowing down: next month’s science-fiction romance Passengers will be followed by movies with Steven Spielberg, Adam McKay, and Darren Aronofsky. In unreal circumstances, Lawrence is learning to assert herself as a real person, whether that means equal pay, privacy, or never being a bridesmaid again. The bar of the Plaza Athénée, an elegant Upper East Side hotel, is empty save for an elderly French couple sipping Bordeaux at two P.M. when in bursts a tall blonde crackling with energy. It is […]
As the third of the wildly popular Hunger Games movies hits theaters, Jennifer Lawrence has been dealing with the dark side of fame: a far more shocking invasion than the usual paparazzi onslaught. Talking for the first time about having her intimate private photos hacked—and splashed across the Web—the 24-year-old star tells Sam Kashner about her fear, her anger, and the call to her dad. You wait for movie stars, but if it’s Jennifer Lawrence you don’t mind. It’s like waiting for a comet to come hurtling into view. She was due to arrive by the pool on the roof […]
So, my review for Catching Fire will be littered with recommendations of other (better) books. Because you can’t really talk about Catching Fire without talking about the book and I was really impressed that they managed to make a better movie than it was a book. I was a bit wary going into this movie. I just finished reading The Dream Thieves and Catching Fire can’t come close to those characters. And the intrigue. And the way the story sinks into you. I’m not sure it would make a great movie but it’s an amazing story. How many times have […]
Tragically, I wasn’t at Comic Con this year. …It’s entirely possible I need to remind myself of the actual definition of tragic but I digress. In lieu of having actually been there I’ve collected all sorts of news and videos and photos from the panels so we can all pretend we were there together. Marvel Marvel definitely knows how to do Comic Con. Though I found their panels a bit lackluster this year, mostly because I’m not that interested in the properties they had panels for. There was a Captain America panel, which was the most interesting. But no good […]
The Hunger Games wasn’t a bad movie. But it wasn’t great either and certainly not as good as all they hype would imply.
The effects weren’t especially shiny or cool.
The action wasn’t really exciting.
There was nothing profound
